Shareholder activism: A Swiss case study

This article examines the phenomenon of shareholder activism using a case study methodology as qualitative research approach. Three affected Swiss public companies have been selected on basis an evaluation all corresponding reports published by Finanz und Wirtschaft (FuW). The covers period from 2015 to 2019. chosen companies, Meyer Burger, GAM (Global Asset Management), and Clariant, were examined over this period. Our results show, that individual activist investors able generate substantial profits for themselves during studied, but not in long-term sustainable manner. Shareholder manifested itself various forms strategies within scope cases. However, we identify general scheme engagement activists. further shows interests between management often collide when it comes decisions about mergers acquisitions (M&A). shareholders tending engage countermeasure order enforce their demands
